I really liked this Phoenix Wright-style crime-solving in theory, but the game is perhaps a bit too forgiving in allowing you to guess-and-check your way through the cases. Collect enough evidence and you can piece together what happened by selecting the most relevant details. Ronan relies on a few ghostly abilities to case the crime scene mind reading, reliving memories, and influencing witnesses to remember specific events all serve as incorporeal ways of gathering evidence. Before getting thrown out a window and shot with his own gun, Ronan was on the trail of this “Bell Killer.” Solving the case becomes the only way for him to shed his spectral form and reunite with his late wife on the predictably ill-defined “other side.”Īs the investigation unfolds, Ronan is dragged through the winding hub world of Salem and distinct areas of investigation. He’s a detective, convicted felon, and widower that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Grand Theft Auto knock-off-that is, until he gets offed by a serial killer stalking the streets of Salem, Massachusetts in the game’s intro. That cop is Ronan O’Connor, the chain-smoking, fedora-sporting protagonist of the game. Yet somehow Square Enix saw fit to publish an Unreal Engine-powered, biggish-budget console game about a ghostly cop solving his own murder.
Murdered: Soul Suspect is weird in a way that's no longer very common for games from big studios, which tend to stick with franchises and gameplay ideas that "work." New ideas are the purview of two-person teams with shoestring budgets and an obsession with pixel art. That set an off-kilter tone the game maintained throughout my play. The first moment of interaction in Murdered: Soul Suspect had me lining up a ghost's limbs as he attempted to "possess" his own comatose body. Platform: PS4 (reviewed), PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC
